Gerontology Professionals of Long Island Aging Film Festival 2011
BIG Hit for Festival Attendees
Long Awaited Viewing for Gen Silent

October 30, 2011, GPLI members and friends from the Long Island community met for the First Ever Long Island Aging Film Festival.  Titled, Visions of Aging, the event was held at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, a co-sponsor for the festival.  Any money raised from the suggested donation of $10 was contributed to the GPLI Scholarship Fund.

The first film shown was The Wednesdays, a short Irish film about an older couple trying to fill the lonely hours of their Wednesdays, leading to rather unexpected consequences.  Second in the lineup was the prize-winning film Young at Heart, from Fox Searchlight Films.  A senior chorus from Massachussetts makes its mark in the community by singing rock songs from the likes of James Brown and Sonic Youth.

The final showing was the film Gen Silent  , a documentary directed by Stu Maddux on the experiences of LGBT elders facing the demands of long term care.

President Matt Bessell led the discussions surrounding each film and represented all of the GPLI planning committee in celebrating the success of this initial film festival venture.
